Why Rasdhoo
Rasdhoo is a local island on its own small atoll ring at the northeastern tip of Alif Alif (North Ari). It's one of the closest North Ari islands to Malé, with a busy harbour, a small village, a handful of guesthouses and dive centres, and a bikini beach. The reefs around it are the main draw: Madivaru, just across the lagoon, is one of the best-known dive sites in the area.
It also makes a handy base for island hopping, since the public ferry links it with Thoddoo and Ukulhas. Rasdhoo Atoll's reefs are rich enough that scientists described a new fish from them in 2022: the rose-veiled fairy wrasse, or finifenmaa, Dhivehi for "rose". It lives deep on the reef, so you're unlikely to see one on a snorkel, but it's a good reminder of how much life is down there.
Getting there
Shared speedboat (fastest)
Shared speedboats leave from the airport jetty twice a day, mid-morning and late afternoon (slightly earlier on Fridays), and come back from Rasdhoo early in the morning and early in the afternoon. The trip takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes. One Rasdhoo guesthouse lists the fare at US$40 per person each way. Your guesthouse will usually book the seat for you.
MTCC public ferry (cheapest)
The government ferry, Route 303, runs between Malé and Thoddoo and stops at Rasdhoo. The timetable effective 1 August 2026 shows:
- Malé to Rasdhoo: Monday and Thursday. It leaves Malé at 09:00 and reaches Rasdhoo around 12:10, then continues to Ukulhas.
- Rasdhoo to Malé: Sunday and Wednesday. It leaves Rasdhoo around 10:35 and reaches Malé around 14:10.
- To and from Thoddoo: several sailings a week link the two islands in about 1 hour 10 minutes, handy if you want to combine them.
- No ferry on Fridays.
The fare is a few dollars, paid at the terminal. Route 301 also links Rasdhoo with Ukulhas and other North Ari islands every day except Friday.
Where to stay
Rasdhoo has small guesthouses rather than hotels, several of them run alongside a dive centre. If you plan to dive, a stay-and-dive package can work out cheaper than booking each separately, so compare what's included as well as the room price.

Things to do
- Dive Madivaru, a horseshoe-shaped reef known for grey reef sharks, eagle rays, schooling fish and turtles
- Look for manta rays at cleaning stations, with the best chances from November to April
- Snorkelling trips to nearby reefs, sandbanks and the uninhabited island of Madivaru
- Learn to dive. Several dive centres on the island run beginner courses
- Hop to Thoddoo or Ukulhas by public ferry for a day or a few nights
- Relax on the island's bikini beach

The hammerhead dive: what to expect
Rasdhoo became famous for an early-morning dive at Hammerhead Point, on the outer edge of the atoll. It's a blue-water dive to around 30 metres at about 6am, so it's only for Advanced divers or those with deep dive training.
Be realistic about the hammerheads. The resort dive centre on neighbouring Kuramathi says it now very rarely sees one, and a dive centre on Rasdhoo also calls sightings very rare. Divers still rate the dive for the grey reef sharks, silvertips and other big fish that often show up. Book it for the experience, not for a guaranteed hammerhead.
Good to know
- Rasdhoo is a local island, so there's no alcohol and modest dress applies away from the bikini beach. Read the local island rules.
- Shops and cafés are limited. Bring any medicine or special items from Malé.
- Fly at least 24 hours after your last dive, and plan the speedboat back to the airport around that.
- Don't touch or feed sharks, rays or turtles, and keep your distance in the water.
Quick questions
How do I get to Rasdhoo?
By shared speedboat from the airport (about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, twice a day), or MTCC Route 303, which leaves Malé at 09:00 on Mondays and Thursdays and reaches Rasdhoo around 12:10. No ferry on Fridays.
Can you still see hammerheads at Rasdhoo?
Rarely. Local dive centres say hammerhead sightings are now very rare. Divers still rate the early dive at Hammerhead Point for grey reef sharks and other big fish.
Is Rasdhoo good for beginners?
For diving, yes: several dive centres run beginner courses. The famous dawn hammerhead dive is only for advanced divers.
Can I combine Rasdhoo with Thoddoo or Ukulhas?
Yes. Public ferries link Rasdhoo with Thoddoo and Ukulhas, which makes a cheap North Ari island hop.
